What Is the History of Promise Rings?

Promise rings date back to the Roman era, when couples were required to wait a certain amount of time before marrying. During this waiting period, they gave rings as a sign of their commitment to one another.

In the 14th century, the “posy ring” (also called a “posey” or “poesy” ring) became popular as a symbol of affection between couples. This ring was a band engraved with a short poetic phrase, often in Latin or French. Later, in the 19th century, acrostic rings spelled out words such as “regard” and “dearest” in gemstones.

The promise ring as a precursor to an engagement ring is more of a modern idea. As couples date for longer periods of time, people have increasingly begun to give promise rings as a sort of guarantee—or promise—that the relationship is heading to marriage.

No. Promise rings, like even engagement rings and wedding rings, are not required as part of a committed relationship.
